About Matthew Burkhardt

About Matthew Burkhardt:

I am 29 from Long Island, NY.  I work in Manhattan as a night shift customer service supervisor for a small web hosting firm in Manhattan.  I have my bachelor's in English literature and writing and am currently enrolled in a Professional Certificate program in Creative Writing at New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

I've been a writer my whole life.  The earliest story I can recall writing down was in third grade when I wrote about a penguin who lived in my freezer.  There was a sequel, as well.  I've journaled pretty much consistently although I'll go through cycles when I stop journaling because it's just day to day mundane stuff and it's boring even to me.  But I always return to putting one word after another on the page, because it's how I reconcile myself with the world.

After spending 2011 taking four creative writing classes at NYU over the course of spring, summer and fall semesters, I'm going to take 2012 and put together an anthology of Seven Deadly Sins' fairy tales for my final course for the certificate program. I've decided to write a classic fairy tale and a modern fairy tale for each sin.  The goal is to have at least seventy pages written by Spring 2013 if not Fall 2012.

About The Write Aspirations:

This is my third attempt at a blog at this domain.  First there was Squarespace.  They hosted a lovely site and it was easy to use and update, but it wasn't free and I wasn't updating nearly as often as I ought to have been to get my money's worth.  No fault of theirs, to be sure.  Then I moved to Tumblr and although I like Tumblr for what it is, I don't think it's the right platform for me to blog.  I'm a writer and I think Tumblr is a better platform for video and images.

So, with a couple of quick changes in my GoDaddy account which Blogger couldn't have made easier, here we are at a new instance of The Write Aspirations.

In this incarnation, I intend to use this platform to review things: novels, short stories, plays, musicals, television, and movies.  By allowing the analytical side of my brain the opportunity to critique what I'm reading and watching, I hope to distract it from picking apart every aspect of my writing that does not live up to my expectations and tastes, freeing myself from the damage I might do as my own worst critic.

Upcoming Reviews:

I'm currently reading A Feast for Crows, book four of George R. R. Martin's epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire.  I am not sure if I will review that book individually or wait until I've finished the latest book A Dance with Dragons before commenting on this series.

I've started thinking about what I want to read during 2012 both in terms of what new books I want to sink my teeth into as well as books that I've read before and am interested to see if they hold up to a second (or third, or fourth, etc.) reading.  Here's a brief sample of what I'm thinking of digging into:

11/22/63 by Stephen King (as part of a read along hosted by Grace over at Feeding My Book Addiction)
The Made Up Man by Karen Heuler
Domestic Violets by Matthew Norman
The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connolly
Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
The Charm School by Nelson DeMille
Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov

That's the tentative list; I'm sure other books will get added and subtracted and added again.

So that's a preview of what's to come.  I'm looking forward to reviewing things again.  It's been a while.
